Background of the study
Yoruba religious texts encapsulate a wealth of spiritual, cultural, and historical narratives central to the Yoruba faith. In Ibadan, the translation of these texts is both an art and a science, requiring a deep understanding of religious symbolism, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references. Various approaches—including literal translation, dynamic equivalence, and hybrid methods—are used to render these texts into Yoruba and other languages (Akinola, 2023). Each method seeks to preserve sacred meanings while making the content accessible to modern audiences. However, striking the right balance between fidelity to the original text and readability remains a significant challenge. Misinterpretations or oversimplifications can diminish the theological depth and cultural richness of the texts (Oluwole, 2024). This study appraises different translation approaches used in Yoruba religious texts by analyzing translated works, conducting interviews with religious scholars and translators, and reviewing community reception. The aim is to identify best practices that maintain both linguistic accuracy and cultural authenticity, thereby supporting the preservation of Yoruba religious heritage (Akinola, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Translating Yoruba religious texts often faces the challenge of balancing literal accuracy with cultural adaptation. Overly literal translations may fail to capture metaphorical and symbolic nuances, while excessive adaptation risks distorting sacred meanings (Oluwole, 2024). In Ibadan, inconsistent translation practices have led to varied interpretations that can affect religious understanding and practice. This study seeks to identify these challenges and propose methodologies to ensure that translations preserve the integrity and cultural resonance of the original texts (Akinola, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate various translation approaches for Yoruba religious texts.
  2. To identify challenges in preserving cultural and theological nuances.
  3. To recommend best practices for effective translation.

Research questions:

  1. What translation methods are used for Yoruba religious texts?
  2. What challenges hinder the accurate rendering of cultural and spiritual elements?
  3. How can translation practices be improved for better fidelity?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores translation approaches for Yoruba religious texts in Ibadan, providing valuable insights for translators and religious scholars. Enhanced translation practices will support the preservation of Yoruba religious heritage and ensure that spiritual messages are accurately conveyed to diverse audiences (Akinola, 2023; Oluwole, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Yoruba religious texts in Ibadan and does not include secular literature or texts from other regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Translation approaches: Methods used to convert texts from one language to another.
  • Religious texts: Sacred writings that convey spiritual beliefs and practices.
  • Yoruba language: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
